At the moment of writing the path towards the selection of the consensus algorithm comprises of three phases.
The initial idea was to us to use the Avalanche protocol as the consensus algorithm. That led to a specification of the Glacier protocol, which currently is deprecated. One of the main reasons for rejecting the Glacier protocol was the liveness issue of the Avalanche protocol, for more on this please refer to the following documents:
The Glacier protocol is considered deprecated, nevertheless could be used as a source of an inspiration.
The second idea was to design a highly scalable protocol based on HotStuff, which led to conception of the Carnot protocol.
